I had been to Athens many times prior to the filming of Lyndey & Blair’s Taste of Greece. It is a city which never fails to excite : a bustling modern city, yet full of ancient monuments. It oozes history and culture. Not to mention food and beverages. Not only wine, but real Greek coffee, ouzo and a whole world of drinks.
I am thrilled that I am taking people who are booked on my forthcoming Gourmet Mediterranean Cruise to retrace our steps. I will be your personal guide for a small group who are booked on Celebrity Reflection, the newest ship of the fleet, complete with real grass on deck for croquet, petanque and the like, a choice of restaurants and wine bar. We are visiting many places – Mykonos, Santorini and Rhodes but also Taromina, Rome, Ephesus, Sorrento and Tuscany. However, Greece for me is very, very special.
As a first timer to Athens, Blair was excited to be there and keen to climb the Acropolis high above the city, the first democratic centre of the ancient world. You’ll love it too!
As a dedicated foodie, though, I just had to take him to the Agora, or meat market first with a stop there for famous tripe soup. OK so this wasn’t a hit but the market is fascinating. It’s all hustle and bustle with some amazing sights.
Greece is also rightfully famous for the quality of its yoghurt and nowhere is it better than at the Stani Patisserie where the stunning Greek yoghurt, honey, walnuts and frappe set us up for our whirlwind day in Athens.
At night we visited a Willy Wonka experience for adults – Brettos Distillery, one of the oldest bars in the city serving 642 different drinks.
It’s fun to taste at least some!
Later I learned a modern spin on Greek food, cooking at Kuzina Restaurant with owner/chef Aris Tsanaklides. We will go there for lunch! He has a rooftop on his restaurant and it is an occasion not to be missed!
You too can experience all of this. Come with me – just book here!
